About Us

Our Purpose

Maplewood Rock and Gem Club fosters community spirit by encouraging the exploration of lapidary arts and appreciation of earth sciences of geology, fossils, minerals and gems.

Members join together to enjoy each other’s company in exploring new avenues of learning through field trips, lectures, seminars, workshops, shows and events.

The club provides opportunities:

* to collect and study gems and minerals
* to help members increase their knowledge of rocks, minerals, gems, fossils and lapidary arts.
* to provide an opportunity for the exhibition and exchange of specimens.
* to support harmonious relations with similar organizations.
* to respect the laws of the land.

Collectively as members of the Maplewood Rock and Gem Club, pride ourselves on  good manners in the field. We abide by the rockhounds code of ethics which is in general use throughout the rockhounding community.

MRGC welcomes adults, youth and juniors who are interested in geology, mineralogy, fossils and lapidary arts.

History

1951- The Maplewood Community Club gave permission to form a rock club as an auxiliary group. At the first meeting Fred Shaw asked the help of members of the Everett Rock Club in organizing the new club. The by-laws were written along the lines of the Everett Rock Club, and the name Maplewood Rock and Gem Club was made official. There were 38 charter members and 3 honorary members. Each person present paid twenty five cents a meeting to build up the treasury. In 1952 the Maplewood Rock and Gem Club joined the Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies. The club’s  incorporation papers were filed in Olympia, in 1954.
